Stem disciplines week

One story a day from 4 to 11 February. The protagonists are the Coding Girls

From 4 to 11 February, the second National Week of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Disciplines is being held, called by law 187 of 24 November 2023, ‘in order to raise awareness and stimulate interest, choice and learning in these disciplines’.

The term Stem is an acronym formed from the English initial of four different disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. With the acceleration of technology and the country's digital transformation, Stem disciplines are increasingly becoming a driving force for the development of the economic, social and cultural fabric. But in Italy we lag behind the European average.

‘In 2023, 25.0% of young people (25-34 years old) with a tertiary degree will have a degree in Stem areas. The share rises to 37.0 per cent among men (+2.5 percentage points compared to 2022) and falls to 16.8 per cent among women (stable share compared to 2022), highlighting a marked gender gap. The territorial differences for graduates in Stem disciplines are evident for the male component: the share varies from 27.5% in the South to 41.4% in the North’ [ISTAT, Levels of education and employment returns | year 2023, July 2024].

Other special days also occur during Stem Week

  • 7 February | National day against bullying and cyberbullying
  • 11 February | World Day for Women and Girls in Science
  • 11 February | Safer Internet Day

We would like to remind you that with the Safer Internet Day (SID 2025) the 9th edition of the Safer Internet Month starts, promoted by the Ministry of Education and Merit and by Generazioni conesse (FMD is part of theAdvisory board). Schools and project partners are called upon to implement activities to disseminate the principles of the positive use of the Internet and technological tools.

To highlight the role of girls and women in Stem disciplines, all week, starting tomorrow, we will share a ‘success story’ every day. For us, however, ‘success’ does not mean fame or celebrity, but the realisation of dreams or projects through being able to freely choose the future. Because you can also be a successful woman behind the scenes, loving your ‘job well done’ or choosing a service profession.

Have a good week, everyone!
