Social Innovation

What does 'innovate' mean in the social sphere?

In the social innovation intervention model, different actors are involved in 'hybrid alliances' - public, private profit, non-governmental organisations, etc. Direct benefits are dedicated to particular segments of the population, but in reality the virtuous dynamic involves the whole community.

In the different areas of action, all the interventions promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale are built on this winning model. In fact, we can say that social innovation is a transversal axis of intervention in all our training programmes: from health to the circular economy, from urban regeneration projects to robotics, the focus on the individual is transformed into the search for collective change and community well-being. The tool at the heart of our social innovation is definitely technology, used in a responsible, creative, democratic way.

With the Factor J programme we have involved 20 young ambassadors in the realisation of the first Health Manifesto, collaborative, from below: a participatory writing to make adults, above all, responsible on the theme of trust in science and research. With the RomeCup creative contests, students, in collaboration with universities, are approaching the professions of the future by prototyping robotic solutions that transform traditional sectors such as agriculture, medicine and elderly care into technology. It is with 'FMD Wagon. From 01 to 100', in collaboration with Facebook, a joint working platform was created involving associations, organisations and local companies to identify problems in the area and develop social and civic innovation projects.

In order to also improve relations and processes, within our training proposal we continue to experiment with innovative methodologies that are very effective but still little known and used in Italy, such as the Lego® Serious Play® method or Design Thinking. The coloured bricks have also entered the university to help future economists develop a culture of the common good. Through the Personal Ecosystem Canvas tool, developed by scientific director Alfonso Molina, we help students in the three-year 'Smart & Heart Rome' programme to explore the concept of holistic sustainability and to examine the sustainability of the person and the planet as part of a single systemic process: while investigating the profound relationship between man and the environment, the students learn to read reality in terms of responsible innovation, to train scientific citizenship and to actively participate in the sustainable development of the territory and in the realisation of smart city projects.

We are also engaged in the construction and testing of new impact assessment tools for measuring social innovation processes.

Social innovation projects and experiences: (being a transversal area, all projects should be included... for now I have only put those not mentioned in the other challenges)

In the social innovation intervention model, different actors are involved in 'hybrid alliances' - public, private for-profit, non-governmental organisations, etc. - and so on.

Direct benefits are dedicated to particular segments of the population, but in reality the virtuous dynamic involves the entire community. In the different areas of action, all the interventions promoted by FMD are built on this winning model. Even the transformation of the education system is in itself a great social innovation.
