A Future in Research for Mihai

The winner of the Research Award interviewed by La Nazione.

“I didn’t expect this result. There were ten of the best researchers in Italy in the finals. It was beautiful, a unique experience. Now, I will continue, as I’ve never given up. I will continue to work in research, as I always have.” Journalist Lorenzo Benocci interviewed Mihai Dragusanu, winner of the Most Promising Researcher in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Award for La Nazione. Here are some excerpts from the interview between the Siena University researcher and the author of the article.

“I have always worked on rigid exoskeletons,” he explains, “but they needed to become soft to simplify their use and rehabilitation.” This is how Mihai Dragusanu “golden track suit” – as it has been named – was born. His research is fundamental for the rehabilitation of individuals with motor issues, degenerative diseases, those affected by muscular dystrophy, and stroke patients. “The hand glove,” he explains, “was sent to France for a research project to help stroke patients move their hands. The wrist is here, in Siena, at the department, and still being tested.” The fundamental aspect is the contribution of artificial intelligence combined with robotics … “Artificial intelligence,” he underlines, “is capable of interpreting the intentions of patients and continuously monitoring the physical state of the upper limbs through a tracking system and an integrated control algorithm. The collected data are then transmitted to the cloud to allow doctors and specialists to analyse patient progress in real time.”
