THE SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE
With the publication of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we officially entered the era of sustainability. The agenda, which was undersigned by 193 UN members, is an action plan for the planet and humans. The plan includes 17 objectives and 169 targets. Sustainability is one of the most urgent challenges of our times, together with a reflection on how digital tools can help us safeguard the environment, diversity, and our heritage, on various levels.
Being sustainable means integrating economic, social and environmental dimentions into action and through strategies. The shift in paradigm must necessarily be anchored to training and education, the first milestone towards a sustainable word.
Moreover, in the last two years, the integration of civic education in Italian primary and secondary schools has posited sustainability as a fundamental transversal macro-area in school curricula. Climate change, fighting poverty, civil cohabitation and solid economies are key issues for the future.
So, how can we help youth to fully understand the sustainability of humans and the planet as part of a systemic process? And how can we encourage them to acquire the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to drive responsible enterprise?
Today’s meeting, dedicated to holistic sustainability, will allow participants to explore the multiple dimensions (educational, social, technological, professional) of sustainability. During the first part, students will be introduced to sustainability readiness through a wide-ranging analysis conducted by Prof. Alfonso Molina. In the second part, they will blend their individual profiles with a circle time exercise using the Personal Ecosystem Canvas (PEC), a self-evaluation tool that takes into account the larger ecosystem of every student, from the individual to the planet.
