New Coding Girls Area
As digitalisation increases, the ability to collect, analyse, and interpret data has become essential to make informed decisions and develop innovative solutions. For this reason, as part of the tenth edition of the national Coding Girls Programme, and in collaboration with the Italian Statistical Society (SIS), we are proposing an innovative declination of the project addressing "Data Science," aimed in particular at students (Years 3-5) of upper secondary schools in Milan, Rome, Caserta, Palermo, and Bari.
The course will include both on-site and on-line training and orientation sessions, creative challenges, and hackathons. It will also be officially recognised as a PCTO course.
OBJECTIVES
• Raise student awareness on the opportunities provided by STEAM studies and professions
• Educate on gender equality
• Promote an ethical, conscious, and responsible approach to new technology
• Use new technology to enjoy, develop, communicate, and promote content
• Provide a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts of data science
• Promote university orientation for technical-scientific faculties
ACTIVITIES
The proposed activities will be developed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, in collaboration with the departments and degree programmes of the universities involved and coordinated by the Statistics and Data Science Group of the Italian Statistical Society. Three two-hour training sessions will be held in schools.
The objective of the training sessions is to introduce students to the challenges of a continuously and rapidly evolving world through two training courses - "Paradoxes in Statistics and Probability" and "We Are Data" - focusing on a little-known aspect of STEAM, the analysis and processing of statistical data, which turns out to be a key to understanding the world around us.
The course will end with a hackathon, hosted by the partner university. This will allow th students, divided into mixed teams, to put the acquired skills into practice.
ROLE MODELING and UNIVERSITY ORIENTATION
During the programme, participants will have the opportunity to get to know and meet role models from universities and the corporate world, be inspired by their stories, and discover new career opportunities and areas.
RESULTS
At the beginning and at the end of the programme, questionnaires will be administered to understand to what extent Coding Girls is capable of introducing young women to STEAM courses and guiding them towards making informed choices.
CANDIDATURES
The activities are mainly aimed at third-, fourth-, and fifth- year students. No prior knowledge is necessary to participate in the courses. Each school can enter more than one class, as long as they are predominantly female.
