Young people and health, together for the future

Young people and health, together for the future

At the Cardarelli hospital in Naples, a new stage of the Fattore J project

Yesterday, Monday 7 April, on the occasion of World Health Day, the Fattore J community gathered at the Antonio Cardarelli National Hospital in Naples for a special event dedicated to the future of medicine and the impact of technological innovation on health. The project, promoted with Johnson & Johnson, aims to bring young people closer to the challenges of contemporary medicine, promoting knowledge, awareness and active participation.

The protagonists of the day were students from four high schools in Campania, Nitti and Vico in Naples and Majorana and Tassinari in Pozzuoli, who had the opportunity to meet with experts from Cardarelli and Johnson & Johnson. The meeting focused on the growing role of artificial intelligence in early diagnosis, personalised disease management and the development of new treatments, particularly in the field of oncology.

According to a survey of students conducted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, the potential of artificial intelligence in medicine is perceived as extremely relevant: 71% believe that medicine and scientific research will be the sectors that benefit the most. AI is associated with faster (62%), more effective (50%) and better organised (52%) healthcare. In oncology, young people see a key role for AI in the development of new therapeutic molecules (58%), in the real-time monitoring of patients (49%) and in early and accurate diagnosis (41%).

Now in its fifth edition, the Fattore J project has already reached over 300,000 young people throughout Italy, involving a wide network of patient associations, academic and institutional partners.

The following people took part in the Naples event:

  • Antonio d'Amore, General Manager of the Cardarelli Hospital
  • Giuseppe Pompilio, Market Access Director, Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine Italy
  • Mirta Michilli, General Director of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale ETS
  • Antonio Granata, Director of the Clinical Engineering Operating Unit, A. Cardarelli
  • Giuseppina Dell'Aversano Orabona, Medical Manager of the General Radiology and Emergency Department Operating Unit, A. Cardarelli
  • Giovanni Riccardi, Head of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence, Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine Italia

The meeting represented a valuable opportunity to strengthen the link between the world of education and that of research, promoting a more informed, confident and participatory vision of the future of healthcare among young people.

In the video, the comments of three students from the Ettore Majorana high school in Pozzuoli, Marika, Andrea and Matthew
‘This conference was really educational. We learnt a lot, also from talking to experts who are older than us. Ten years ago artificial intelligence and medicine seemed like two separate worlds, but today we realise that the future lies in their integration. We young people, who are digital natives, experience AI every day with tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot: seeing it applied to medicine is an exciting prospect’ (Marika).
‘This day has greatly expanded my knowledge. Thanks to the experts‘ contributions, I have a better understanding of the complexity of the role of those who work in the medical field with the support of artificial intelligence. In my family, medicine has always been thought of in a traditional way, but today it is clear to me that the future requires a deep integration between health and technology’ (Andrea).
‘I really appreciated the way the topic of artificial intelligence was dealt with: without extremism, but with balance. AI is not something that will replace doctors, but a fundamental tool to enhance medicine. It is important to talk about it in this way, in an informed and open way’ (Matthew).
