SOCIAL. “KNOWLEDGE VOLUNTEERS: INTERNET EVEN FOR ELDERS – A NETWORK PRESENTED AT THE ROME CAMPIDOGLIO, NIERI: AN IMPORTANT INITIATIVE”

(DIRE) Rome, 27 Sept. – From the youngest elementary school students to elders aged 90+ everyone is in it together to promote active ageing and digital literacy. There are 36,000 Knowledge Volunteers of every age and nationality in the network developed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale thanks to the experience of eleven editions of “Grandparents on the Internet”. The Network was presented today at the Rome Campidoglio as part of the “Knowledge is Wealth – Share It!” Campaign.

Moreover, the event presented in the Sala della Protomoteca, packed full with individuals of all ages, was the perfect opportunity to present a video aimed at recruiting new volunteers from around the world along with the launch of the fourth edition of the “Knowledge Volunteers Competition” (financed by the European Commission) and the twelfth edition of “Grandparents on the Internet,” an initiative that to date has trained nearly 20,000 over sixties.

Rome Deputy Mayor Luigi Nieri opened the event: "The objective is to provide all citizens, of all ages and economic conditions, with the opportunity of being equal. And today, knowing how to use technology is of paramount importance. This is why what you do is so important,” Nieri explained to the many present volunteers. “And at present,” the Deputy Mayor emphasised, "helping others in an epoch in which everything depends on money is an invaluable experience that must be defended and promoted.” Last, but not least, the Deputy Mayor explained to the youngest volunteers: "You who were born with a tablet in your pocket, must help your grandparents to understand how they work!”

Other speakers included Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, Erica Battaglia, President of the Rome Social Policy Commission, Valeria Baglio, President of the Rome School Commission, and Alfonso Molina, Professor of Technology Strategy at the University of Edinburgh and Scientific Director of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.
