Project TEO – Third Age On-Line promoted by the Province of Rome in collaboration with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale makes Internet much easier for the elderly.

The protagonists are students from 10 Roman Schools (including the province of Rome) and 36 elderly centres (19 in Rome and 17 in the Province) with broadband Internet access thanks to the Provincial Wi-Fi Programme. The elders are tutored by the students via the Grandparents on the Internet model designed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.

Both Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, and Nicoal Zingaretti, President of the Province of Rome, were present at the project presentation, held on February 20 at the Pullino Elderly Centre.

Amongst the schools involved in the project, there are some that have already participated in this great experience.

“The project taught me to listen to others and increase my self-esteem,” explains Chiara Fucilli (16), a student tutor from the Liceo Classico Socrate in Rome. Her pupil was Grandma Maria (82) who would like to learn English on-line with Chiara's help.

The project is also beneficial to teachers. Roberta Poli, a teacher at the Istituto di Istruzione Superiore Sibilla Aleramo pointed out that “the elders finally understand that technology can help them too, as well as helping the students to identify a reference point and enjoy an exchange of roels that makes them feel important and appreciate the wisdom of the elders."
