Italian STEM Week
This is the first National Week for Scientific, Technological, Engineering and Mathematical Subjects (February 4-11). It was established in November with Law N. 187/2023 to raise awareness and stimulate the interest of children in these subjects. Established through an initiative of the Ministry of University and Research, in collaboration with universities and research agencies, the week includes initiatives throughout Italy and the launch of the #IosonoStem social campaign.
The week is also marked by various other anniversaries. Tomorrow is Safer Internet Day with the slogan "Together for a Better Internet." The following day is the Day Against Bullying and Cyberbullying (February 7) and Sunday, February 11, is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Among the measures launched by the Ministry of Education and Merit, there also is a publication entitled Guidelines for STEM, published in October, which introduces actions dedicated to strengthening mathematical-scientific-technological and digital skills through innovative teaching methodologies.
On this topic, there also is a paper by our Director General, Mirta Michilli, entitled The Practice of Digital Skills: Beyond STEM in Schools, published on forumpa.it and on its Annual Report. These guidelines, circulated by the Ministry of Education and Merit, represent an important step forward, one that underlines the importance of investing in digital skills and technical-scientific subjects. However, we must be able to look beyond the subjects. Indeed, a multidisciplinary approach is not sufficient, what we really require is an “anti” subject approach. Schools should also be able to teach beyond subjects, by issues, by challenges, as happens in frontier scientific research which enjoys the collaboration of very different professional profiles."
Before wishing everyone a happy STEM Week, let's remember that for us every day is STEM, or rather STEAM! Just take a look at our work calendar below.
