Social Salerno

The Istituto tecnico industriale in Salerno is named after Mr. Basilio Focaccia (1889–1968) an engineer, professor and politician. He came from a poor family of farmers and had to stop studying in fifth grade and study on his own. Then, he began studying again when he entered the Navy and earned a degree in Engineering. Mr. Focaccia was also awarded a Medal of Gold for his cultural activities.

The slogan chosen for the school website is “Come see where the future is born” and the poster exclaims: “When I grow up, I want to be a Focaccia.” (A play on words, as in Italian "Focaccia" also means bread loaf.) The Salerno School continues to attention to the social sphere and has chosen to participate in the Nonni SUD Internet digital literacy programme for the elderly. The school will run the regional pilot, focusing on recycling old company PCs for elderly centres and local associations.

Ana Lain interviewed Antonino Landi who coordinates the digital volunteers and their recycling programme.

The Nonni SUD Internet Project is financed by the Fondazione per il Sud as part of the Special and Innovative Projects action line.
