The School of Us

Michele Gerace interviews Marta Pietrelli and Francesca Sabatini

Schools are called upon to undergo profound change. It is not simply a matter of introducing new technologies, but of rethinking the role of teachers and learning models. This was the focus of the conversation broadcast on Radio Drago on 13 March, as part of the programme *Bar Europa*. Michele Gerace spoke with project officer Marta Pietrelli and teacher Francesca Sabatini, coordinators of the community The Teachers of the School of Us, an initiative of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale [see the news item The Teachers of the School of Us on the radio].

The ‘Scuola del noi’ is a community of practice involving teachers from all over Italy, a permanent laboratory of educational innovation that focuses on inclusion, digital technology and transformation. “We start with the teachers,” explains Marta Pietrelli, “because a good school is only good if those who teach excel,” echoing the vision of Alfonso Molina and the thinking of Tullio De Mauro. At the heart of the discussion is the impact of artificial intelligence on teaching. Not merely an update, but a genuine paradigm shift. “We’re talking about year zero,” emphasises Francesca Sabatini, “a breaking point that resets the old ways of thinking. The teacher is no longer the sole source of knowledge, but becomes the director of a complex ecosystem”. In this new scenario, students and teachers become co-designers of educational experiences, whilst new “methodological compasses” emerge to navigate an increasingly dense and complex infosphere. The role of the teacher evolves: from a transmitter of content to a facilitator of critical thinking. The community also extends into the digital space thanks to the FMD Academy, a platform that brings together teaching resources ready to be tested and replicated in the classroom, fostering peer-to-peer sharing and continuous professional development.

To conclude the interview, two symbolic references that capture the essence of the project. On the one hand, the poem *Lentamente muore* by Marta Medeiros, an invitation to take risks and live life to the full. On the other, Luciano Floridi’s philosophy and the evocative image of David Bowie’s *Space Oddity*: like astronauts stepping out of the capsule of traditional teaching, the ‘Year Zero’ teachers are not alone, but part of a connected community. Because, today more than ever, education means building together.
