RomeCup 2024: The First Superteam Championship

For the Rescue Line and Soccer categories

The next edition of RomeCup will feature the first Italian "Superteam" championship thanks to the agreement signed between the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and Robocup Junior Italia, an international organization for robotics competitions which aims to promote robotics and artificial intelligence.

For the first time, at RomeCup 2024, the challenge between Superteams in the Rescue Line and Soccer categories becomes a true championship, to encourage collaboration and the exchange of knowledge between teams of students from different schools.

The Soccer Category will feature two teams of students from different high schools, matched randomly, compete. Each Superteam will field one robot per school and therefore, to play at their best, the two teams will have to share strategies and technology. There will be three categories in the challenge: Light Weight, Open League, Entry Light Weight. The match is played in two 10-minute halves, with a 5-minute interval.

The Rescue Line Category will also feature two teams of students from different high schools, matched randomly. Each Superteam will compete with its own robot according to a logic of cooperation in a field divided in half with different difficulties. The robots will have to be able to face, in no more than 8 minutes, all the challenges presented (i.e. following a line, moving around an obstacle, picking up and moving objects, and bringing victims to safety). The Superteam with the highest score will win. Compared to the classic challenge, there will be a few surprises.

Both categories will follow international rules. Any variations will be communicated before the competition.

“This is the coronation of an ambitious project that gives further strength to the competition, which was initially held as part of RoboCup, as a collateral activity to the world championship. It will now become an official competition, which in the coming years could reach a European level,” explains Tommaso Scarano, teacher and National Representative of the Robocup Junior Italia Committee.

“This new challenge between Superteams further enhances the spirit that has always inspired the RomeCup, one that has always been a part of our ethical code as an organisation. Young people discover the thrill of learning in an open context, collaborating, sharing knowledge and skills, and exploring the most inclusive frontiers of technology together," added Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale
