Robots in Action after an Earthquake

Robots in Action after an Earthquake

The story of Francesco from the Marconi School in Nocera Inferiore.

Francesco La Femina, a student at the Guglielmo Marconi School in Nocera Inferiore (Salerno), is about to face the oral session of his state exams, before sitting the admission test to continue studying computer engineering. However, he does not exclude the possibility of starting to work immediately and study at the same time. Francesco has a trump card: his knowledge is based on passion and commitment. His state exam will be based on a thesis on IoT, sensors, and robotics, as well as relational databases and software architecture for web site development. Moreover, he will be able to mention his success at RomeCup 2024 with a rover programmed to intervene on disaster scenes and save victims amongst the ruins. It was an important experience together with his classmates. Francesco’s passion for robotics grew out of the possibility of immediately applying IT and electronic knowledge to the real world.

Thanks to the SRR robotic arm, which was developed as part of Project “Earthquake Rescue Rover” coordinated by Prof. Giuseppe Amato, Francesco participated in the new Robotic Arm Challenge. The rover searches for earthquake victims via an endoscopic video-phonic probe that is lowered into the rubble. As the rover advances over the scene of the earthquake, the robotic arm is necessary to move rubble out of the way.

Here are the interviews conducted at the Rome Campidoglio during RomeCup 2024 with Francesco and Prof. Giuseppe Amato, an electronic engineer and coordinator of the school robotics lab since 2016.

Students from Marconi are back on the podium at Romecup2024. The computer science students participated in the competition and placed third in the Explorer Junior Category and won two awards in the new Robotic Arm Challenge with the “Earthquake Rescue Rover” and “Surgery Theatre Assistant Roberto” projects.
