Today, Google and the Fondazione Mondo Digitale presented the Officina – New Jobs Workshop, an area with four didactic labs and training tracks to promote digital skills and provide professional orientation activities for over 10,000 young men and women.
The “Officina” was inaugurated today at the presence of Italian Labour and Social Policy Minister Giuliano Poletti and the President of the Regione Lazio, Nicola Zingaretti. Unfortunately, Education, University and Research Minister Stefania Giannini was unable to attend, but sent a tweet, while Mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino, was represented by Councillor Marta Leonori. The initiative has been organised with the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and the collaboration of the Ministry of Education, University and Research, the Regione Lazio and Roma Capitale.
The aim of the initiative is to train 10,000 young mena and women aged 15-29 over the next two years through weekly 22-hour courses. Precedence will be given to youth neither studying nor working.
The “Officina” provides a vast range of laboratories aimed at increasing success in the 21st century, including: digital manufacturing, gaming, video-making and immersive reality. All labs will be held at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym at the Rome Città Educativa on Via del Quadraro 102.
Students can attend tracks addressing 4 didactic areas:
- Fab Lab: learn to use typical fab lab tools, such as laser cutters, 3D printers, etc.
- Video Lab: Video making with 3D animation and special effects
- Game Lab: Game development and interactive storytelling
- Immersive lab: immersive technology and augmented reality
Moreover, each track is supplemented by activities for the development of soft skills (leadership, team building, motivation).
The “Officina” is located at the Rome Città Educativa in Via del Quadraro 102.

“Google has been investing for quite some time in young Italians to act as digital evangelizers for local economics,” explains Fabio Vaccarono, Country Director, Google Italy. “Recently, we announced that we will train one million European citizens with digital skills. Together with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, we renew this commitment thanks to an experimental track that will use technology to promote social inclusion and digital skills amongst students and young men and women looking for a job or professional requalification.”
“We have embraced this challenge with passion and have equipped new spaces with technology and content to provide a significant experience to the youth who decide to choose us, “ explains Alfonso Molina, Professor of Technology Strategy at the University of Edinburgh and Scientific Director of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.
“We have, for example, stereoscopic screens for the GameLab and have equipped the Immersive Lab with a cost-efficient CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment. We are one of the first Italian realities to provide education in immersive reality and a digital manufacturing lab based on the specifics of the MIT lab. We are extremely satisfied that the students who inspired us to do this, will be the first to use it.”
