Artist Giacomo Lion is one of the protagonists of Project Suburb View.

As we mentioned in the news entitled A New View of Suburbs, activities for Project Suburb View with Urban Vision have kicked off at the “Idroscalo” in Ostia, Rome’s Municipio X. Project Officer Miriam Pintore reports on the first lab.

The first meeting with artist Giacomo Lion at IIS Carlo Urbani in Ostia provided great inspiration to the students coordinated by Prof. Vittoria Pescatori. Giacomo, who defines himself as an "immagineer" (a mix between an artist and an engineer) introduced the students to the world of digital art through a stimulating and accessible approach.

At the beginning the students were a little shocked, but thanks to artists explanations they progressively embraced the dimension of creativity. They explored the meaning of digital art, discussed the tools they knew about like Photoshop and Blender, and imagined how to transform areas in their neighbourhood into emotive works of art through a project blending on-line and off-line.

The main idea of the project is to create a virtual map of emotions related to local areas, like the Pietro Rosa Park and the Port of Ostia, using innovative techniques and drawing inspiration from great artists like Giotto. The students, divided into groups, began brainstorming on the possible digital products.

During the meeting, we recorded the opinions of some students, like Flavia, 17, from Fiumicino, and Danilo, 17, from Spinaceto, both of whom were enthusiastic about the project. Personally, I believe that this first meeting drew the students in. The shared words and ideas will take root, and we will begin gathering the creative fruits of this process in the upcoming meetings.
