The World Health Organisation has presented a new report entitled World Report on Ageing and Health.
Thanks to the progress of medicine and research, the world population over the age of 60 will double by 2050, rising from today’s 900 million individuals to nearly 2 billion, even overtaking the number of children aged under 5 by 2020.
According to WHO forecasts, the global population is increasing at a faster and faster rate. Today, for the first time in history, the majority of humans is 60 or older, while 125 million individuals are 80 years old. By 2050, 120 million individuals will live in China, while 434 will live in the rest of the world.
Italy ranks second globally in terms of elder population: 21.4% of citizens are aged 65 or over and 6.4% are over eighty years old. Japan ranks first globally in terms of elder population. Italy ranks first in Europe, followed by Germany and Portugal.
The Fondazione Mondo Digitale has always aimed to improve the life quality of elders by training specialized operators like social agents for active ageing. A better life quality for over-sixties brings benefits to society as a whole.
