Fish Swimming in the Air

Designed by Masakazu Yurt Kato, a Japanese Designer at the FabAcademy, and Ilaria La Manna, Coordinator of the International FabLat Kids Network, the Koinobori Workshop, which transforms oriental tradition into educational technology, alights at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym.

In Japan, the May 5th Children’s Day is celebrated by creating huge coloured paper or textile carps that are flown in the wind as if they were swimming in the air. These kites, named after “koi,” meaning carp, symbolize the energy, growth and courage that we wish on the future generations.

In the Digital Making Lab, the “Kois” will be created from laser-cut textile. Then, the children will be able to colour and personalise the kites as they prefer, before they are flown from Rome’s rooves, balconies and houses to celebrate a day of solidarity and brotherhood.

Besides providing a fun and relaxing afternoon, the lab will provide an opportunity to acquire specific skills, stimulate cognitive processes and drive creativity.

Tomorrow, April 30, the lab will be attended by children in year three at the Salvo D'Acquisto Primary School at the Istituto Comprensivo Viale dei Consoli. The lab will be held by Masakazu KatoFederica Pellegrini and Matteo Vicogliosi.

The lab will also be held on Saturday, May 4 from 3 to 7 pm. Children aged 3-10 are invited to participate. Children younger than 7 should be accompanied by a parent or adult relative.
