Minister Quagliariello and Education Undersecretary Rossi Doria participated today in a meeting on the on-line constitutional reform consultation entitled “Partecipa a scuola! Consultazione pubblica sulle riforme costituzionali.” The meeting was held at the Liceo Augusto in Roma together with students, teachers and families, including grandparents. In particular, active citizenship and the exchange of knowledge were at the core of the presentation by Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.

The student tutors from Grandparents on the Internet, the digital literacy plan based on the inter-generational learning model promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, helped the elders participate in the on-line consultation on public reforms. Moreover, in order to involve as many people as possible living near the schools, the school administrators also organized other “Days of Participation.” Information on the participating schools is available at:  partecipa.miur.it

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale participated in this awareness-raising and education process together with the Ministry for Constitutional Reform. “The Constitution can be just a piece of paper or a significant vital document,” declared Minister for Constitutional Reform Gaetano Quagliariello. “It can be a value that generations pass on to each other just like happened with this initiative.”

Activities kicked off last July with the Summer Camp held at elderly centres in various Italian regions. Young students and expert adults helped their peers to compile the on-line questionnaire (www.partecipa.gov.it), explaining the potential of the Internet not only for public consultations, but also for all other forms of active participation.  This was also a strategic experience that was held on the European Year for Citizens. Undersecretary Marco Rossi Doria emphasized the importance of reducing school dropouts and allowing all students to exercise their rights.

These activities will continue in schools throughout Italy and Europe thanks to the various local declinations of Project Grandparents on the Internet (18 Italian Regions an 8 countreis) that use the didactic tools (video lessons, tutorials, manuals, etc.) including the E-gov, E-med and National Service Charter Manuals. These “large font” handbooks have been developed to be easily read and simple to use with the supervision of Professor emeritus Tullio de Mauro. You can download all the didactic material at: www.mondodigitale.org/risorse/materiali-didattici/nonni-su-internet.

“We involved our Network of Knowledge Volunteers to help raise awareness throughout schools and elderly centres. This exchange of knowledge has allowed us to reach nearly 20,000 elders throughout Italy and over 15,000 young students,” explains Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.
