Community Welfare at School

One of the six special mention awards for the first edition of the Telemouse 3.0 Competition was presented to the liceo scientifico Evangelista Torricelli that is twinned with the Valcannuta elderly centre and is currently celebrating its tenth anniversary. Tutors, teachers and elders won the “Community” Award for the spirit of collaboration with which they faced the project and the ability of uniting the participants with each new challenge.

A concrete example of this is the lo self-produced video made for Social Media Week with Luca and Grandpa Ugo as testimonials. Here is what the student writes about his “teacher”:

My name is Grandpa Ugo Melillo and Luca Sebastiani is my tutor.
I’m 78 and doing fine. I don’t need or miss anything. I'm not one of those who’d like to be 40 years younger. It would be too tiring to relive them all again.
However, I wouldn’t mind remaining as I am today for another thirty years!
I had never tried to learn how to use a computer. It just didn't seem necessary. Today, instead, thanks to the course organised for elders, I must say I was wrong. Using a computer is a lot of fun and is now a full part of my life. It helps me learn about places, people and customs and hundreds of other things.
I would really like to thank all those who organized this initiative and, in particular, my young tutor.

It’s incredible if you think about it: a seventeen-year-old dealing with an old geezer like me.
He is so polite.
He never lost his patience and explained every concept and nuance with great simplicity. Day after day, he helped me become fully enthusiastic about this great new adventure as a student. MY OPINION ???
Exceptional character – fantastic explanations - A top quality tutor.

What Ms. Maria Pia has to say:
When they told me about Telemouse, I became very curious. Then, I found out that the Evangelista Torri School was participating in this initiative and I immediately enrolled. This is a fantastic initiative both for the students and the elders. It helps bring together different generations and compare ideals and life styles. Every adult has the same tutor for the entire course. I never had a tutor that was younger than me, an adolescent, and honestly, I was somewhat embarrassed … actually, we both were. When I saw the boy who would become my tutor, Francesco Feliziani, so young and clean cut, I immediately knew he was the one for me. I was too curious. I wanted to see how a boy could help me do something that I had always avoided. And I was pleasantly surprised by his clear and simple explanations to teach me something that seemed so complicated before. Francesco was fantastic. Notwithstanding his young age, he was able to do something quite hard: teach an adult.   No doubts, no difficulties: he solved every issue and helped me move on. He was polite, gentle and incredibly helpful, filling me with enthusiasm and the desire to learn more. It was nice to experience that classroom full of elders and youth working together, pairs bent over a monitor, young and old, students and teachers.   These fantastic students answered our questions and guided us throughout this experience. At the end we were one big family - adults, students and teachers - laughing, joking and working lots and seriously. This was a unique fully satisfying experience and I would advise everyone to try it. I was lucky to have Francesco as a tutor and if I learned anything it’s your accomplishment. I big kiss from your Grandma Maria Pia.

Elders and tutors also all thank the key figure, the course coordinator Prof. Maria Mascheretti who "with her constant presence and smile encouraged us all."

This year’s course ended with a surprise party for the elders organized by the students with a piano bar!
