An Hour of Bible Study at School?

An Hour of Bible Study at School?

The proposal advanced by Monsignor Gianfranco Ravasi involves Tullio De Mauro…

An hour of bible study at school for everyone, not only for those who attend courses on Catholic religion, to inform students about “the great code of our culture and understand our identity”. The proposal that Mons. Ravasi advances, as an Italian, for Italian schools was reported by the ANSA News Agency.

Mons. Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, advanced his proposal during the briefing on the synod underway in the Vatican when questioned about the opportunity of substituting the study of the Catholic religion with a course dedicated to the history of religions.

The proposal for the bible study course, Ravasi pointed out, has not only been promoted through the collection of signatures by “Biblia”, a lay biblical culture association, but had “also interested the former Education Minister, linguist Tullio De Mauro”.

During the course of the 2007-2008 school year, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, has carefully followed the Educational Bible Project designed by Pasquale Troìa, analysing its educational values and objectives for elementary and middle schools.

The results of this investigation have been published in the volume entitled Innovation in Roman Schools, edited by Alfonso Molina and Ilaria Falcetta, and are also available on-line in the on-line learning environment.
