No one left out of the code

No one left out of the code

On 9 June, the book launch featuring contributions from Mirta Michilli

Next Tuesday, 9 June, at 11am, in the Sala Romoli of the National Cybersecurity Agency in Rome, the book No one left out of the code. Women who are rewriting AI, edited by Alessia Canfarini and Simona Rossitto and published by Il Sole 24 Ore, will be presented. The event will be introduced by Monica D’Ascenzo, with contributions from Nunzia Ciardi, Donatella Sciuto and Luigia Carlucci Aiello.

The book addresses the issue of gender equality in the field of artificial intelligence, starting from a key realisation: AI is reshaping the world and women must be able to play a leading role in this transformation, not merely be the recipients of its effects.

Among the voices featured in the book is that of Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, who was interviewed about the Steam programme for female students, created to support the guidance, training and participation of girls in scientific and technological disciplines.

This commitment continues today with Coding Girls & Women, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale’s national programme dedicated to women’s empowerment and gender equality in digital skills. In recent weeks, the project has brought students, including primary school pupils, into Italian universities, transforming these institutions into open spaces for discovery, guidance and experimentation. Coding Girls & Women involves schools, universities, companies, role models, female researchers and volunteers in activities covering coding, emerging technologies, career guidance, peer-to-peer training and experiential workshops.

For the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, ‘no one left out of the code’ is also a daily focus: combating stereotypes and gender gaps, making technologies more accessible and inclusive, and supporting the younger generation – particularly girls – to imagine their future in the sectors that are transforming society.

In Italy, there are also many initiatives by private organisations, foundations and associations. Among these are the projects of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, which boasts a long history, of which Mirta Michilli is co-founder and now general director. Among its many activities, the Foundation runs “Coding Girls”, to raise awareness among girls about STEM careers, both at university and in the professional world, with a strong focus on women’s participation in the workforce. “We present STEM as a great career opportunity. All ICT roles, given that there are few graduates, are in fact available, well-paid and hybrid.” To achieve effective results, Michilli proposes “a major alliance between schools, universities and businesses. Most students choose universities without ever having set foot inside them. We take them to various Italian universities and help them make an informed choice” [pages 166 and 167].
