The first hackathon of the national Coding Girls Tour was held yesterday. The Coding Girls Programme, which is promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the United States Embassy in Italy, in collaboration with Microsoft, has the ambitious objective of increasing the number of women in scientific sectors.

The coding marathon, which was held at the Milan Politecnico, was coordinated by Emily Thomforde, an American Code Educator and Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics (STEAM) Specialist, who has returned to Italy for the third year in a row to train hundreds of young women.

The young women from the Caterina da Siena, Feltrinelli and Schiaparelli-Gramsci High Schools in Milan used a wide range of creative blocks of code in the challenge amongst peers. The event was kicked off by Francesco Bruschi, Professor of Information Elaboration Systems, who welcomed the young students to the Milan Politecnico, and Franscesca Del Duca, Major Events Manager for the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.

After hours of coding, the winning teams received their awards from Barbara Cominelli (Director Marketing and Operations, Microsoft Italy) and Chiara Daneo (Digital Transformation Councillor, Milan Council).
