For Whom the School Bell Rings

For Whom the School Bell Rings

Six schools from the Calabria Region have chosen to join the Nonni SUD Internet digital literacy plan for the elderly promoted by the FMD with con Auserand Anteasand the support of the Fondazione con il Sud in six regions: Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Puglia, Sardinia and Sicily.

The six Calabrian schools are:
  • L.S.S. LSS Da Vinci, Reggio Calabria
  • I.T.C. "R. Piria", Reggio Calabria
  • ITC L. Palma, Corigliano Calabro, Cosenza
  • I.I.S. di Corigliano Calabro, Cosenza
  • I.T.I. "A. Monaco", Cosenza
  • I.I.S. “L. Da Vinci”, Lamezia Terme (CZ)

Ana Lain gathered the impressions of various participants at the training workshops:

The R. PiriaTechnical Institute is one of maybe two Italian schools that alternates school and work abroad and it certainly is the only expanding school of its type in the south. Headmaster Francesco Barillà explains the school’s didactic programme and the choice to apply a particular type of pedagogy.

In the audioclip, deputy Headmaster Fortunato Praticò explains why he decided to coordinate the Nonni SUD Internet Project at the Liceo scientifico statale L. Da Vinci in Reggio Calabria.

Valeria Bonforte, local Auser manager, proposes a collective vision of the For Whom the School Bell Rings documentary by Emiliano De Gregorio e Alessandro Sacchetti that tells a true story that took place in the small town of Acquaformosa in Calabria. In order to save the small municipal school, the grandparents had to sign up for elementary school!

Pasquale Iaria, an Auser volunteer, believes that solitude is the malady of the century and that the project will address this problem. Moreover, he adds “helping helps.”

The Nonni SUD Internet Project, developed with Anteas and Auser, is financed by the Fondazione per il Sud as part of the Special and Innovative Projects action line.
