When the Earth Shakes

In the late evening of June 23, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake was felt in Rome. The epicentre, according to the INGV, was three kilometres from the Municipality of Colonna. Emergency services received a number of phone calls from worried citizens.

For the guests at the Enea Migrant Reception Centre (former Sprar now Siproimi), it was their first ever experience of an earthquake. “They had never felt one before in their countries,” explains Federica Pellegrini who collected their impressions.

"Some of them were in their rooms, while others were sleeping outside because of the heat, but they all felt the earthquake. And they didn’t understand what was happening, until the centre operators reassured them.”

Some of them were very scared, while others, like Bakary, thought it was a joke, that one of his friends was shaking his bed! And this gave rise to the idea of narrating the experience through a comic strip.

With the help of Federica, a coach at the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, the new cartoonists wrote and illustrated storyboards that they will perfect with designer and maker Matteo Viscogliosi, today from 10 am to 1 pm.

Project #HERE, conceived by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and developed in collaboration with the “Tre Fontane” Cooperative at the Sprar-Siproimi Centre has developed a permanent workshop on new technology for both the guests and operators at the centre to improve their digital competences and experiment with new ways of socialising and learning in a creative and innovative manner. Project activities also include the organisation of a digital corner dedicated to storytelling.
