Well-being in the digital world: wellbeing and learning

The new series of PariPasso webinars for the educational community gets underway

The first session of the new series of PariPasso webinars took place. This project by Rizzoli Education, organised by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, is dedicated to educational inclusion and supporting the educational community. The session, entitled Well-being in the digital world. Well-being and learning, featured psychologist and trainer Claudia Campisi and communications specialist Nicoletta Vulpetti.
The discussion centred on overcoming the rigid dichotomy between the real and digital worlds. As Claudia Campisi emphasised, the younger generations live in a world where online and offline are integrated and act as extensions of one another. Today, as many as four in five teenagers use several social media platforms simultaneously. For this reason, adults should not focus solely on the time spent in front of a screen, but on the quality of the experiences, the content consumed and the relationships formed.

During the meeting, participants reflected on the neurocognitive impact of digital devices, highlighting how evening smartphone use and exposure to blue light delay sleep by 30–40 minutes, and how hyperstimulation and multitasking fragment attention and memory. To guide young people without putting up barriers, the best approach remains building relationships: “Less control and more connection”, based on the value of open questions and actively listening to the answers.

Nicoletta Vulpetti provided a concrete, family-based example, sharing her experience of the “Family Digital Pact”: a letter-contract drawn up together with her daughter when she was given her first smartphone. A two-way agreement, based on mutual trust and the sharing of clear rules (from managing sleep to respect for others), accompanied by five key tips for parents and educators:

  • Start by mentioning the child’s name and a positive quality to make them feel seen and valued.
  • Always explain the ‘why’ behind every rule.
  • Write down the adults’ promises too, making the pact a mutual commitment.
  • Link each rule to a specific place, a specific time and a concrete action.
  • Keep the door open, renewing the pact as young people grow up.
