What a surprise for the young tutors manning the stand for elders at the Social Media Week! There goes TV personality Michele Mirabella: a perfect potential “student” from the Class of 43.
"If one has everything planned out," Mirabella argues "it is quicker to use a book for research..." The students counterargue that the web is much faster. It’s a brilliant and excited discussion. The TV host keeps upholding his ideas and even turns to Greek and Latin quotes … “They are at the basis of every computer,” but the students don’t give in and point out the binary system.
"A computer is organised just like a brain," says Mirabella "and we have had a humanistic education …”.
For a second, it looks like the students are going to lose; Mirabella meets a friend who is walking past, but then he charges right back on the subject of syntax. “Having arrived here by taxi …” and launches into a complex sentence flourishing with subordinate clauses.
A young tutor listens and then strikes: “but maybe the computer helped you find your taxi!”
“No doubt,” answers Mirabella. It’s 1-0 for the Digital Angels.
Here’s a video clip of the Cominciamo bene estate TV Programme reporting on “Digital Grandparents” in which Michele Mirabella introduces a report on the Grandparents on the Internet project.
