Out of the 572 elderly centres in Lazio, attended by over 174,000 citizens older than 55, 70 are in the Province of Viterbo. Amongst the many different activities (social, cultural, recreational, volunteering and training) provided by the elderly centres, what role do technology and digital literacy play?
Mr. Roberto is the Vice President of the Centro sociale polivalente comunale “Pilastro”.
“I love technology," he explains to the knowledge volunteers present at Medioera, "but, I'm stuck in the nineties! When I ask my son for help, he tells me to read the manuals. I read them, but I don’t understand a single word. Your explanations, on the other hand, were perfect. I’ve understood everything!” Roberto is finally ready to abandon his Olivetti Lettera 22.
While the discussion centres on Web 2.0, Carolina and Elisa capture the voice and enthusiasm of Roberto.
Elisa Amorelli interviews Luciano Barozzi, President of the Pilastro Center, who speaks about the volunteering and solidarity initiative (La calza della Befana più lunga del mondo) that they recently hosted, while the kids keep looking for the befana, the good old witch that brings gifts.
“Elders can’t move around easily.” Internet “allows them to manage their tasks directly from the elderly centre,” says Angelo Burla, 70, President of the Ellera Elderly Centre, who would like to learn how to keep a blog.
