Schools Meet Enterprise

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale continues to organise events for STEM in the City: over 15 appointments in Milan and Province with 8 partners.

On May 6-8, 2019, as part of the STEM in the City organised by the Milan Council, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale will promote a strategic alliance amongst enterprises, schools and universities to promote the scientific and technological education of young men and women, support female talent and new professional profiles and gap the mismatch between school and work.

The STEM Marathon organised by the Milan Council aims to help the new generations to acquire the skills necessary to take advantage of the new opportunities in the digital sector and reduce the gender gap in the ICT sector. The Fondazione Mondo Digitale will contribute its main programmes on new professions and organise special visits to enterprises. The objective is to drive a virtuous cycle between education and enterprises that will make young men and women the protagonists of digital transformation.

To promote gender equality and the professional satisfaction of women, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale has organised an educational marathon – a Hackathon in Pink - on May 6 at 9:30 am at the ENI Offices in San Donato Milanese. Roberta Cocco, Digital Transformation Councillor - Milan Council and Barbara Caputo, Researcher at the Genoa IIT, will encourage and inspire the 65 young high school women working on energy efficiency , along with the young mentors from the Milan Politecnico [see pre hack - verso WomENcourage 2019 (in Italian)].

On May 8 at 10 am, Floriana Ferrara, Director of the Fondazione IBM Italia, will meet with young women from IIS Caterina da Siena to discuss enterprise opportunities in the digital sector [see Design Thinking - Verso WomEncourage (in Italian)].

Both initiatives will provide an opportunity to announce the arrival in Italy of the womENcourage 2019 Programme promoted by ACM, the top global scientific association in Computer Science, and Sapienza University of Rome. The programme will organise conferences, hackathons and meetings with role models to encourage the young women to pursue their studies in science and computer science. This year’s event will be hosted by the Rome MAXXI Museum on September 16-18, 2019.

Another appointment reserved for women will be the “Girls in STEM Hackathon” on May 8 at 9.30 am at the Milan Microsoft House. The coding marathon will be inaugurated by Barbara Cominelli, COO, Marketing and Operations Director Microsoft Italy, and Mirta Michilli, Director General, Fondazione Mondo Digitale. The hackathon will conclude the coding and artificial intelligence labs [see Laboratori Steam (in Italian)] held as part of Programme Ambizione Italia for Schools, which involves over 250,000 Italian students.

On May 6-8, students will experiment with courses organised by Living Digital, an original programme developed by Facebook and Free Formers that is held in Italy in collaboration with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and allows students to learn about crucial issues such as big data and cybersecurity. Moreover, thanks to the Fondazione Cariplo, students at three schools in Milan participating in Project Open Space and selected by the “Con i bambini” Call, will participate in a sound design workshop and learn about the creative use of technology and new market segments.
