Schools at the Baku Climate Conference

An initiative of the Viraçao&Jangada Association directed by Paulo Lima

We are pleased to promote this initiative organised by the Viração&Jangada, Association directed by Paulo Lima, an Ashoka Fellow like our Scientific Director Alfonso Molina: participate with your class in the UN Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan (COP29) on November 11-22, 2024.

The Viraçao&Jangada Association will allow students to see the UN climate negotiations up close with Project My School at the UN Climate Conference – COP29, promoted and cofinanced by the Trento Provincial Agency for Environmental Protection (APPA). The project is developed in partnership with the Italian Society for Climate Science (SISC), Trento Science Museum (MUSE), Italian Climate Network, the Italian Association for Media and Communications Education (MED) and the support of Cova Cucine.

Free activities for middle and upper schools include:

  1. TRAINING
The first activity is on-line training (Friday, Nov. 8, 11:00-13:00) during which climatologists and climate negotiation experts will explain what happens at COP and the complex mechanism of the United Nations Climate Conference.
  2. COP FOCUS AND SIMULATION GAME
The second phase, which teachers and students will undertake independently, is a focus on the UN Climate Conference through:
    a) Reading a text
    b) Watching a Video
    c) Playing a simulation game on UN Climate Conference negotiations.
  3. LIVE CONFERENCE FROM BAKU
The third activity will be participation in the Conference, on-line live from Baku, on Thursday, November 21 at 11:00, for one hour on the YouTube channel of Agenzia di Stampa Giovanile. Classes will interact with experts and young participants on site, who will explain what is happening at COP29 and answer any questions.

Didactic resources will be transmitted directly to participating teachers. Moreover, students will be able to inform themselves on COP29 through the content published on the Agenzia di Stampa Giovanile (Youth Press Agency) and its Instagram and Facebook profiles. Content will be produced and shared before and during the two weeks of COP29 by a youth delegation that will travel to Baku from Trento to follow the conference with Viraçao&Jangada. Content will be provided in Italian, English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
