Yesterday, a very special student returned to school at the Istituto superiore Luigi Einaudi in Rome. Norma, a 93-year-old student who attends the Primavalle elderly centre, received a degree in Art History from the Università della terza età and is now tackling a new challenge thanks to Project Going Digital: learning how to use a computer and a mobile phone.
Norma showed up for the first lesson of the digital literacy programme promoted with the City of Rome with the computer she received for her 90th birthday and her “Brondi” mobile phone. The students were fascinated by her tenacity and desire to learn. She immediately became “the grandma who never gives up.”
Norma was “chosen” by tutors Denise and Alessio who have provided her with extraordinary dedication, explains Eleonora Curatola. "They used a graphics programme to develop a legend for the buttons on her mobile phone, a guide that she can easily take with her wherever she goes.”
In the interview, Denise and Alessio, both 18 years old, reveal their first impressions. It’s the first time they act as tutors and digital facilitators. The students are coordinated by Stella Caracciolo, Graphics Professor and Coordinator for the IIS Einaudi - Plesso "Via F. Borromeo, directed by Diana Guerani.
Project Going Digital, supported by the Council for People, Schools and Communities of the City of Rome - Social Policy Department extends Project “Grandparents on the Internet” throughout the entire city, involving 151 Elderly Centres (CSAs) and 60 schools in Rome.
The project is coordinated by Cecilia Stajano, FMD School Innovation Coordinator, with the support of Eleonora Curatola.
