The School I’d Like

Alfonso D’Ambrosio is a Physics Professor at the Istituto Kennedy in Monselice. He has a degree in Physics, has conducted four doctorates and has a passion for teaching and research.

In a recent interview with the Il Gazzettino daily, D'Ambrosio described his professional career as follows:

“In my first months of teaching, I tried to be a “classic” teacher, sitting at my desk and explaining the usual mathematical and physical notions. After a few months, I asked myself if this was the type of school I really wanted,” he explains. “So, I began to develop my own personal didactic programme with content, technology and methodologies. The most similar didactic methodology is the IBSE (Inquiry Based Science Education). I start with a problem to stimulate the students to investigate, formulate hypotheses and often develop an experimental approach or model. The approach is very similar to that used in modern research. I love to work in groups with the students and we often use technology.”

D’Ambrosio was the only Italian teacher amongst the five finalists at the London Science on Stage, an international science and education festival financed by the EU that brought together teachers from around the world on June 17-20. Now, he has chosen to participate in the Global Junior Challenge together with his students to “share a different way of schooling.”

We slowly begin our road towards the final event of the Global Junior Challenge, which will be held in Rome on October 28-30, 2015, with D’Ambrosio’s passionate teaching method.
