Running for Afghanistan

The success of the Italian Paralympic Team in Tokyo (August 24 – September 5) are attracting a new audience that is passionately following the competitions. And the press is dedicating ample space to the event, reporting on the incredible stories of the athletes, such as Monica Contrafatto, who we met at RomeCup 2019.

WOMEN’S SPRINT

The aim is to finish under 15 seconds … Sprinters Martina and Monica have trained with this objective. And they grew up just as quickly as women. Only three years have elapsed between Martina’s scooter accident and her gold medal. Monica was hit by a bomb during a peace mission in Afghanistan and, yet, just a few months of training and she joined the team. Today, she is the world’s fifth fastest sprinter on the 100-meter dash.

This is how we introduced the talk with the two Paralympic athletes who met with students to show them what amazing things can be accomplished with prostheses.

Monica has also declared to the press that she will be running for Afghanistan. And our entire community is standing behind her and rooting her on.

“I never finished my work. Even if it means losing my other leg, I want to return to Afghanistan and help rebuild peace.” [“Ribelli, personaggi e storie della Paralimpiade“ by Claudio Arrigoni, Corriere della Sera, August 24, 2021].
