Robots Meet in Rome

Italian schools are present with 156 teams and 56 olympic champions.

Focus on the genius women of robotics for the Month of STEM and research and safety, from virtual reality to drones. As part of the RomeCup, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale relaunch the eSkills for Jobs 2016 and Get Online Week 2016 European campaigns.

On March 16-18, Rome will host the 10th edition of “RomeCup 2016 – Excellence in Robotics in Rome” with the successful multi-event formula: competitions, labs, showcase area, conferences and debates.

The competitions will involve 156 teams from schools in 17 Italian Regions competing for the world championship selections (RoboCup). The showcase area at the Palalevante (Croce-Aleramo School) will feature 200 prototypes, 56 of which are “robotic champions” selected for the Robotics Olympics promoted by MIUR with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. The winners will receive their awards on May 24 at the Parma Maifest, at the inaugural evening of the SPS IPC Drives Italia Fair.

According to the International Federation Robotics, by 2018, there will be 1.3 million robots in the world’s factories. However, it’s service robotics that will experience the most significant growth. This is a sector that has been closely followed by RomeCup, especially on account of its benefits for the inclusion of the most fragile categories, such as elders and individuals with disabilities. By 2018, ca. 35 million service robots will have been purchased for personal use with enormous opportunities for growth and new jobs created by robots for the younger generations.

About 15% of start-ups invest in service robotics. This was the focus of last year’s event. This year, the 10th edition will open with a conference dedicated to “Robotics for Development” (March 16, 10 am, Istituto Croce-Aleramo).

Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, will introduce the works. Speakers include: Edvige Mastantuono, MIUR Director; Emilia D’Aponte, Headmaster; Alfonso Molina, Scientific Director of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale; Arturo Baroncelli, COMAU Manager on the IFR Executive Committee and Stefano Franchi, Director General of Federmeccanica.

Three genius women of robotics will participate in the debate moderated by RAI journalist Celia Regina Guimaraes: Barbara Mazzolai, ITT Micro–Bio-Robotics Lab Coordinator, Cecilia Laschi, Associate Professor of Bio-Robotics at the Scuola Sant'Anna di Pisa and Barbara Caputo, Associate Professor of Computer Engineering at the Rome Sapienza University.

“Research and Innovation: from virtual reality to drones” is the subject of the second debate with Lt. Col. Paolo Nurcis (Ministry of Defence), ENEA Robotics Laboratory Director Claudio Moriconi, Professor Silvello Betti (University of Tor Vergata) and Nicola Formicola, Air Movie Lab start-up.

The success story of robotics as a strategic development axis for smart specialization policies will unfold at RomeCup 2016. This year, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale has selected a school in the suburbs of Rome: the Istituto d’istruzione superiore Croce-Aleramo (Via B. Bardanzellu 7).

On Friday, March 18, at 9:30 am, students and robots will move to the Rome Campidoglio for the final competition phase and the awards ceremony (ca. 12:30 am).

The RomeCup is promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale with MIUR, Rome Città Educativa and Sapienza University. It is sponsored by COMAU, ENEA and Media Direct /Campus Store. The media partner is Dire Giovani. RomeCup also promotes the eSkills for Jobs 2016 and Get Online Week 2016 European campaigns.
