The Rescue Robot

The protagonist of this new instalment of “RomeCup Stories” is Alessia Galli, a mecanical engineer teaching at the Istituto tecnico e Tecnologico Ettore Majorana in Avezzano. For the last four years, her school has participated in the Rescue Line Challenge at RomeCup. With the new regulations, the team of young designers has worked on developing new solutions for the competition prototype: Rescue Robot Atom. Moreover, the school will also participate in the “On Stage” Category at the next RomeCup.

In this interview, Prof. Giacomo Palombi also addressed the issue of the gender divide in scientific subjects. Notwithstanding the fact that the gap is closing in, young women are still not prepared to fail, an essential component of research. As Edison said: Failure is a way of identifying the wrong route to reach an objective. When young women make a mistake, encounter a difficulty, they are confronted by a stereotype: “It’s not your cup of tea, really,” explains the teacher. And she concludes with a quotation from American activist Eleanor Roosvelt: nobody can make you feel inferior without your consensus. Young women must learn to stop limiting themselves and learn to make mistakes without losing their self-esteem.
