A Passion for Logic

Valerio Stancanelli, a student at the Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei in Catania, is 14 years old and loves coding, developing web sites, mathematics and logic. He is also a national Sudoku champion, and a regional chess one, as well as a Digital Ambassador for Project Make: Learn: Share: Europe(MLSE).

"I found out about Project MLSE at the Global Junior Challenge, in which I participated with enthusiasm in October 2017 and where I met the group of Digital Ambassadors," explains Valerio. "I was immediately interested in the "Make, Learn, Share" method as it allows you to learn and creatively develop new competences through peer exchange."

For his Open School Unit, Valerio held a detailed workshop on "HTML, CSS & Programming, Languages for Websites and Programmes," which was based on three modules:

  • HTML and Introduction to CSS
  • CSS & Bootstrap
  • JavaScript

The workshop days were hosted by Valerio’s school thanks to the support of the Head Mistress Gabriella Chisari. The lessons attracted a good following and participants learned to use Atom, a text editor di that allows users to modify web code, and GitHub Desktop to publish and update websites.

Over the summer, Valerio will be busy at the Logic Championships, studying English and enjoying the seaside. Moreover, Valerio participated in the Under-16 National Chess Championship  in Scalea (July1-8, 2018) and will also take part in the Italian Under-18 Sudoku Championship in the Province of Varese (Tutto è numero, Caldé, July 26-29). Then, he will move to the seaside in Sicily, in Marina di Ragusa where his grandparents live, before travelling to Cambridge for a study vacation he won (Bank of Italy Prize) at Cesenatico Mathematics Olympics.

Best of luck, Valerio!
