During the two days, the new challenges on Social Robotics and Autonomous Driving with 5G Technology were launched as university contests at RomeCup (April 20-24) at the Sapienza University Marco Polo Building (San Lorenzo Area, Rome). Students were divided into teams for these two exciting competitions and started work on a robotic prototype to present at the event.

On January 24 at the Spazio Attivo Roma Casilina, experts from the Sapienza University Department of Computer, Control and Automation Engineering (DIAG) with Professors Luca Iocchi and Paolo Cirinei from Catenate srl addressed the issue of social interaction between grandparents, robots and grandchildren. The day was opened by Regione Lazio Economic Development, Commerce and Craftsmanship, Research, Start-ups and Innovation Councillor Paolo Orneli and Mirta Michilli, Director General, Fondazione Mondo Digitale [see news: Grandparents, Robots and Grandchildren and Social Robotics Challenge].

On February 7, Professor and Researcher Federica Pascucci from the Department of Engineering at the University of Roma Tre addressed autonomous driving, while Alessio Zagaglia, Secretary General of the Fondazione Lars Magnus Ericsson, introduced students to the opportunities provided by 5G. On the same day, as part of Safer Internet Day, Psychologist Aaron Henrich addressed bullying and cyberbullying. The day was opened by Luigi Campitelli, Operations Director, Lazio Innova, and Alfonso Molina, Scientific Director of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale [see news: Smart Mobility].

The brainstorming marathons were preceded by collective session with the Lego Serious Play Methodology held by Cecilia Stajano, Lego® Serious Play® Facilitator and Fondazione Mondo Digitale Community Manager, as well as Design Thinking with Matteo Viscogliosi and Federica Pellegrini, FMD Coaches. Moreover, participants were motivated and introduced to the use of digital manufacturing devices and 3D printers by Stefano Gigli, Project Manager at Lazio Innova and Davide Mariani, Fab Lab Spazio Attivo Roma Casilina Coordinator.

Now, a new phase begins for the participants who will turn to developing a prototype based on robotics, coding and the Internet of things. The teams will be supported by partnership experts, professors and coordinators.

A beautiful challenge leading up to the RomeCup!
