The Migrant’s Voice

The Migrant’s Voice

“Live it to narrate it. Through the eyes of a group of young migrants, Rome changes colour and is transformed. All you need is a smartphone, a pair of headphones and a voice that narrates stories of Rome and memories of distant lands: from the Ivory Coast to the Congo, to Ghana, Syria and Guinea.” This was how La Repubblica journalist Laura Barbuscia  described the new instalments of “Invisible Guides,” a project presented at the 2017 Global Junior Challenge [see article (in Italian): "Guide invisibili": la città segreta vista dai migranti].

Invisible Guides, developed by Laboratorio 53 onlus and Echis - Incroci di Suoni in Rome, won the 8th edition of the Global Junior Challenge in the "ICT for the Integration of Migrants and Refugees" Category [see news: #GJC Winners]. And this year, from June 28 to September 15, the project brightened Rome’s with "Passeggiate sonore di e con i nuovi cittadini" (Walks with Rome’s New Citizens).

We continue to follow the Global Junior Challenge International Competition. Over the course of eight editions, the GJC identified over 600 success cases and assigned more than 100 awards [see news: Organisational Value Charts at School and Neighbourhood Innovation].

The award, a Medal of Rome, was presented to Andrea Cocco during the ceremony at the Rome Campidoglio. The jury presided by Alfonso Molina, presented the award with the following motivation:

15 migrants describe two Roman neighbourhoods. The sound walks are an inter-cultural walk through the capital city. The migrants, who share our streets, squares and beautiful monuments, describe them from their point of view, and not as guests.
