The Mathisis Challenge

Last week (June 7-8), the Athens University of West Attica (Campus 2) hosted the IoT & Game Hackathon, a coding marathon to develop intelligent games that improve learning experiences [see news: Learning Games].

All participants received a short learning graphic to design and develop learning materials (LM) that can be adapted to different learning experiences and IoT devices provided by Projects InLife and Trillion.

The two winning teams were able to design, develop and integrate into the MaTHiSiS Platform a range of didactic materials based on quizzes that aim to sensitize the behaviour of citizens in case of road accidents and improve the safety of our communities. The two teams developed learning materials with three different levels of difficulty, corresponding to MaTHiSiS requirements, adapted the learning experiences and demoed the final product.

Members on the winning team include:  Theodore Psallidas, Alexander Mitsou and Apostolos Maniatis, students at the Computer Department of the University of Thessaly; the second-placed team members are Christos Socratous, student at the University of West Attica, and Chris Gioftsos (Junior Developer).

The teams were helped by Tasos Dimanidis (CERTH), Thomas Techene and Vincent Ponchaut (DXT) and Pavlos Kosmidis (Project InLife).

The jury was composed by the Technical Directors of the three projects (Nicholas Vretos, Konstantinos Demestichas and Charalambos Patrikakis) as well as Theofanis Orfanoudakis, Director of Didactic Methodology and the Technological Lab at the Hellenic Open University.

The hackathon was organised by Project MaTHiSiS - Managing Affective-learning THrough Intelligent atoms and Smart InteractionSfinanced by the European Commission as part of Programme Horizon2020 ICT 2015 – Information and Communication Technologies.
