Masks Against the Virus

A snorkelling mask can save a life. An inventor and a doctor have transformed snorkelling masks into ventilator masks for patients suffering from coronavirus. The news was reported on all major media. Makers around Italy are participating in the joint effort to meet the needs of hospitals and rapidly print valves and connectors. This is the story of one of them …

Marco Brocchieri, a Fondazione Mondo Digitale Coach and the founder of WiFi Informatica, has recently been providing his experience with digital manufacturing to Ambrosia, an association of archaeologists. And archaeologist Matteo Lombardi informed him about the call for makers concerning the health emergency.

Marco Brocchieri immediately joined the call for makers, launched by the Fab Lab Brescia, on a project to support the hospitals at work on the Covid-19 emergency: the production of 3D connectors that allow snorkelling masks to be transformed into ventilator masks. Thanks to social networks, the news immediately went viral in Rome and its province and in two days, 80 connectors were produced and shipped out.

In the interview with Ilaria Bonanni [@Ilaria_FMD], Marco explains how he began collaborating with Matteo Lombardi at Ambrosia. The developed connectors are part of a 500-piece lot requested by the Italian Civil Protection Service to convert Decathlon Easybreath masks into emergency ventilator masks thanks to the project developed and shared for free by the Brescia-based Isinnova company [see: Maschera d’emergenza per respiratori ospedalieri (in Italian)].
