The Internet Corner at the Villa Lais Elderly Centre is equipped with computers and high-speed Internet provided by Telecom Italia. It opens every Wednesday at 2.30 pm to allow the elders to practice their computer skills.
The elders are helped by 10 students from IIS Leopoldo Pirelli in via Assisi, who began working as volunteers on April 15, and are coordinated by Prof. Emanuela De Marco, Project Telemouse Coordinator. The course that just ended involved another fifteen students.
What formula does the Pirelli school to involve students in volunteer activities?
Peer eduation is one of the innovative elements that attracts the students. In fact, the junior volunteers that will hold the first lessons at the elderly centre attend the second year in school and will be accompanied and trained by elder students who have already tutored at the school.
Results are excellent. Grandparents and volunteers were extremely satisfied and are already looking forward to next week and the one after … all the way to May.
