In 2010, nearly 44 million people – refugees, asylum seekers and evacuees – have had to live far from their home. This data is from the UNHCR Global Trends 2010 Report, which, however, does not take into account the thousands of people fleeing from the war in Libya and other emergencies that have developed since the beginning of the year. Many of the refugees, nearly 3 million, come from Afghanistan and live in 49 countries, with the highest concentration in Pakistan and Iran. Of the 43.7 million evacuees, 15.4 million are UNHCR-protected and Palestine Agency refugees, 27.5 million have fled their country and ca. 850.000 are seeking asylum. Fifteen thousand children have been separated from their families. The majority of them is from Afghanistan and Somalia. Moreover, the report indicates that out of the 15 million refugees, less than 200,000 have been able to return to their countries, while out of the 27 million who stayed in their country, nearly three million have returned to their homes. The UNHCR also reveals that 12 million people currently have no nationality.
