Global Junior Challenge

On December 11-13, schools will meet in Rome for the ninth edition of the Global Junior Challenge, the international competition rewards the creative use of technology for education. The opening conference will present stories of inclusion in contexts of educational poverty to drive a reflection on the role of school for the growth of communities, as indicated by Prof. Tullio De Mauro. The showcase area will present over 60 projects for innovative didactic activities. School administrators will participate in a special Lego Serious Play Methodology training session. The awards ceremony will be held on December 13 at the Rome Campidoglio.

The ninth edition of the Global Junior Challenge, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, is dedicated to Objective 4 of the Agenda 2030: quality education for all. The international competition rewards the creative and innovative use of technology for the education and future of young men and women. On December 11-12, Biblioteche di Roma and the Civic Zoology Museum will host a showcase area with over 60 finalist projects addressing inclusive didactics and schools that have successfully shared their talents and resources: from a virtual museum programmed by students with learning difficulties to the experience of a school at a hospital and the use of software and algorithms to custom-tailor courses for students with learning difficulties.

“All students can achieve results of excellence at the international level, if schools implement maximum inclusion.” This was a firm belief of Linguist Tullio De Mauro, to whom the GJC has been dedicated since 2017. A message that is vital in a country where 7 out of 50 students drop out of school and that has been implemented by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale’s Phyrtual Innovation Gym Model, a strategic resource that guarantees growth to everyone, even in complex local contexts. This will also be the focus of the roundtable on “School and Overall Growth” that will be held on December 11 (10 am) at Biblioteche di Roma. Experts, teachers, school administrators and institutions will be asked to reflect on the central role of education in the development of individuals and the community. Video interviews will portray the school experience in four areas characterized by high educational poverty in Milan, Rome, Naples and Bari.

The Global Junior Challenge is increasingly organised as an event-lab that provides a snapshot of Italian schools and sheds light on the commitment of teachers and school administrators. A special session with Lego® Serious Play® will be reserved for headmasters to develop a common outlook on quality education to share with civil society and policy makers. Teachers will be able to enjoy the labs organized by European Project CanVASS+ to test accessible digital tools. On December 13 at 10 am, the awards ceremony will present the Tullio De Mauro Award to the Innovating Teacher and School Administrator at the presence of Silvana Ferreri De Mauro. Moreover, a special award will be presented to the best project on artificial intelligence for education, developed by a teachers as part of the Ambizione Italia for Schools Programme promoted by Microsoft Italia, as well as the winning teacher of the Google Computer Science First Programme.

The Global Junior Challenge, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, is developed in collaboration with Erickson and has the patronage of the Rome Council for Individuals, Schools and Solidary Community. The event is supported by Microsoft Italy and the Google CS First Programme and co-financed by Erasmus+ Programme Projects CanVASS+ and Accord.
