During the last week of the Milan Expo, the Israeli Pavilion presented the Youth for the Elderly” Award, which co-sponsored by Ernst&Young and Hype (Youth Startup Foundation), to the most innovative start-ups implementing projects for elders.
Thirty-six schools from 22 countries submitted projects from which the seven finalist projects from Israel, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and the United States were selected. The award was presented by Donato Iacovone, Managing Partner, Ernst&Young for Italy, Spain and Portugal.
Contenders for the most innovative project included the Managery Otimizing Memory presented by Team USA (a system to help elders optimize their memory), the robotic Handy Hand presented by the Italian team, ChairWaze (an innovative system for wheelchairs) and Hand N Hand, a new social network, developed by an Israeli duo, a SeniorApp to improve communication designed by the Romanian team, Elder Watch, a technological watch for emergencies designed by the Macedonian team and friendly robot Dan from Montenegro..
Gabriele Caiazzo, a student at the IIS Carlo e Nello Rosselli School in Aprilia (Latina), brought Italy onto the podium with the robotic "Handy Hand," designed by Gabriele and presented at the RomeCup 2015, which placed third.
Here is how Aprilia News reported onthe success of Gabriele and his school:
“The robotic hand prosthesis, which placed third right after the American and Israeli projects, was conceived to help individuals with motor disabilities. The robotic hand, in fact, can copy all the movements of a human hand.
The project also participated in Project Meet No Neet, promoted by Microsoft and Fondazione Mondo Digitale, to promote the competences necessary for youth to access the job market.
It is a prestigious recognition for the young man from Aprilia, but also for the school that educated him, the Istituto Carlo e Nello Rosselli, which over the past five years has organised electronics and robotics laboratories, thanks to its highly qualified professors, becoming a reference point for education, creativity and innovation.
Other students from the same school also presented their projects thanks to the robotics and electronics teachers Alfio Benedetti and Ada Seguino. It was an experience that allowed students to confront significant realities from other countries around the world.”
