Elders in the Madonie

The Grandparents on the Internet Model developed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale returns to Castelbuono, in the Province of Palermo, thanks to the support of the Fondazione con il Sud. The members of five elderly centres that will become local hubs will attend courses at  IIS Failla Tedaldi.

Grandparents on the Internet in the Province of Palermo: the intergenerational learning model developed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale returns to Castelbuono, in the Province of Palermo, to provide over-sixties with digital skills thanks to the support of the

Fondazione con il Sud and the commitment and determination of Mayor Antonio Tumminello.

The general objective of the project is to promote active ageing and solidarity amongst generations through intergenerational learning courses that bring together local elders and students.

Last week, the first 15 elders started attending lessons at the agricultural section of IIS Failla Tedaldi, directed by Headmaster Maria Cicero. Their teachers are students, coordinated by Prof Giuseppe Fusco. Today – Tuesday, December 15 – fifteen mmore elders will begin their digital course under the coordination of Prof Laura Donato.

At the end of the course, all participants – elders, tutors and teachers – will receive a participation certificate, which is also valid as school credit for the tutors. Schools, in fact, appreciate the educational value of the project and have inserted it in their formal curricula, while teachers enjoy using their didactic skills as digital animators and specializing in teaching the elderly.

The project will use the "La trama del web" Manual, which is part of the Didactic Kit for promoting digital literacy amongst over-sixties. The manual was developed by Matteo Troia (21), one of the Italian digital champions led by Innovation Ambassador Riccardo Luna, a role created by the European Union.

The project also includes the creation of Internet corners in elderly centres so that they can serve as local hubs for all citizens to pursue peer education. Castelbuono, which is located in the Parco delle Madonie, has more than 30% of citizens aged over sixty, mostly women, and looks at them as a strategic resource.

Today, at 4 pm, a public event will be held at IIS Failla Tedaldi in Castelbuono to present the project.
