Educational Fab lab

For school year 2015-2016, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale will provide six schools in Lazio with the opportunity to participate in the Educational Fab Lab Initiative, providing creative-ludic, 3D printing and digital manufacturing labs for schools.

The labs are based on the Life Education Model developed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale that provides young men and women with the skills necessary to live and work in the 21st century.

Where

The project will be held both in the FMD’s Phyrtual Innovation Gym (Rome, via del Quadraro 102) and in schools.

When

The project will begin in September 2015 and will last for the entire school year. The specific programmes will be developed with individual schools and will be based on 1-4 monthly meetings.

Learning Outcomes

The aim is to introduce students to creative design through the digital manufacturing that is available in the Phyrtual Innovation Gym Fab Lab. The Fab Lab is based on a research project developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and that rapidly spread throughout the world. The Fondazione Mondo Digitale opened a Fab Lab where students learn about advanced technology such as laser cutting, 3D printing and other useful devices to develop their ideas.

Active Skills

Students will become an active part of a hands-on approach that starts with the development of a concept and ends with the creation of an object. Students will follow a learning track that moulds science, mathematics and technology to the development of creativity and expression. This means that the participants will increase their awareness of the relationship between shape, function and object and rediscover manual tasks, thereby becoming young makers. Custom-tailored learning processes and problem-solving activities increase self-esteem and develop the ability for teamwork.

The Teacher’s Role

Teachers collaborate with experts from the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, acquiring state-of-the-art skills for innovative and interdisciplinary didactics, becoming facilitators and observers of the learning processes in which the students are involved.

Participation

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale will select six schools that it believes are best suited for this type of project from amongst those that submitted the application form by September 7, 2015.

Funding

Schools that have the Educational Fab Lab Project approved by the Collegio dei docenti and Consiglio di Istituto are elegible for PON and other funding through their collaboration with the FMD.
