Italia Oggi cites Fondazione Mondo Digitale as an organisation committed to inclusion
According to the European Commission's Report on the State of the Digital Decade 2025, only 45.8% of the Italian population has basic digital skills. This figure reflects a structural problem that also closely affects the third sector.
As noted by Italia Oggi in an in-depth article on 28 August, many non-profit organisations struggle to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by digital tools, from online fundraising to participation in public tenders and the use of artificial intelligence.
According to Istat data (Permanent Census of Non-Profit Institutions 2021), 79.5% of Italian non-profit organisations use at least one digital technology, but only a minority adopt advanced tools: 36.1% rely on digital platforms, 28.4% on mobile applications and only 1-2% experiment with solutions such as IoT, blockchain or big data. This leaves 20.5% of organisations “non-digitised”, with obstacles related to limited resources, poor digital culture, lack of qualified personnel and insufficient training in ICT.
In this scenario, the article highlights some organisations that are bridging the digital gap. Among these is the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, recognised for its contribution to inclusion and social innovation. The Foundation is also one of the few non-profit organisations to experiment with all the digital technologies surveyed by Istat, from the use of mobile platforms and apps to advanced solutions such as cloud, artificial intelligence, big data and IoT.
Alongside other players - such as Fondazione Italiana Accenture, Fondazione Piemonte Innova and Fondazione Cariplo - FMD works to accompany the third sector towards full digital citizenship, promoting skills, sustainability and new forms of collaboration.
As Italia Oggi points out, the digital transformation of the non-profit sector cannot be entrusted to a single player: public, philanthropic and private resources are needed, combined with shared training, innovation and participation programmes.
