Day Care at Home

The 27th World Alzheimer’s Day (Sept. 21) arrives during an especially troublesome period for patients and their families on account of the health emergency and the severe measures implemented to contain the virus that have led to the closure of day care centres.

Thanks to Project “Day Care at Home” promoted by the Fondazione Alberto Sordi, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the Rome “Campus Bio-Medico” University collaborated to continue holding the meetings of the Day Care Centre for Fragile Elders in Trigoria during the lockdown thanks to the use of “virtual rooms” on smartphones, tablets and PCs.

Patients at the day care centre managed by the Associazione Alberto Sordi are 75-95 years old and the lockdown measures kept them from meeting as usual. So, in full Covid-19 lockdown, in order to ensure continuity of services, the centre went digital to allow the patients to share experiences and emotions. The seniors met up with operators and volunteers via videoconferencing to read newspapers together, share their thoughts and worries from their living rooms and create a new “social environment” through Internet and new technology.

Thanks to operators from Foundation and the Associazione Alberto Sordi, the collaboration of educators from the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and a group of students from the Faculty of Medicine, Engineering and Food Science at the Rome “Campus Bio-medico” University, the elders were able to keep in good physical conditions notwithstanding the social distancing.
