Coding Girls Stories

Even 20 years ago, I was one of the few Italian women working at CERN …

We continue to speak about “women who programme the future” with the story of Marina Ministrini, a professor at IIS Francesco Saverio Nitti in Naples, one of the first schools to join the Coding Girls Programme.

I have been teaching Maths and Physics for 20 years, but I began my career in international research: first at CERN and then at the INFN National Labs in Frascati.

I started teaching after I had ten years of experience in research and I believe that I benefited greatly from that experience. Scientific research has always been led by men and this is probably why young women are not attracted to this type of work. At the time, I was one of the few Italian young women working at CERN. And this is one of the reasons that have made me so enthusiastic about the Coding Girls Project. And why I introduced it to my students and the school director.

Coding Girls is a great experience from many points of view. Besides introducing young women to STEM subjects, it also helps to build up their confidence in Mathematics and Physics and realize that there is no one way to do things in Maths. In fact, the young women with the most difficulties in these subjects are always the first who wish to participate in these experiences and they always come back to class with greater motivation.
