The City in Lockdown

A new challenge for finalist schools: integrating their projects with “social antibodies” against isolation. The students will present their projects, which will be evaluated by a jury, during a live event. Cultural storytelling creatives and artists as an antidote to empty spaces

On Map, the first phase of Project RoLAB - Rome Live Art Lab, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in collaboration with the United States Embassy in Rome is nearing its end with the selection of the high school proposal submitted to the Call with Ideas. The ten projects on urban regeneration of abandoned areas in the City of Rome were inspired by the challenge launched by Steven A. Wolff, Director of AMS Planning & Research and cultural business expert [see news: Call with ideas di RoLab].

Now the students, who are attending on-line courses with IED and Quasar [see news: Online Sessions for Ro-Lab], have received a new challenge. Integrate their projects with “social antibodies” to generate inclusion notwithstanding the physical distances required by the health emergency.

Together with school, we wish to educate young agents of development for local communities to acta s “neighbourhood social catalysts.” This is the first real-time co-design of abandoned urban spaces during the lockdown. During a live event on June 5, students will present their projects and interact with the jury (talent style). Their works and recorded elevator pitches will be examined by a jury of experts with a vast range of competences (decision makers, administrators, etc.) to decide the winner. In the meantime, once the projects have been integrated with the recommendations of the jury, the ten finalists will be able to kick off a crowdfunding campaign. FMD will provide the Phyrtual.org platform.

PAS| Public Art Service, the second action of Project Ro-Lab was based on installations and performances in unusual urban areas to provide original interpretations of common life and local opportunities, as well as a wall mapping on the facade of the United States Embassy in Rome. However, physical distancing measures require us to transform this action into virtual collaboration. The Public Art Service is a call for artists and students at international academies in Rome to share the transformation of spaces during the health emergency. A cultural storytelling and multi-person service to transform into a viral video to share, infect and fill common areas with culture, art and creativity.

At the end of June (date tba) we will share the results of RomeLive Art Lab, a common work platform for urban regeneration through art, experiment with institutions, local communities, schools, stakeholders and private investors through an original "on-life" event. The winning project will be announced at the final event and we will present a viral video and share all the good practices for “cultural infection” developed during the course (mentorship, stage, etc.). We will be helped to develop social and cultural antibodies by presigious contributers from institutions (ministers and ambassadors), academia (urbanists, architects, etc.) and strategists (cultural managers).
