The City of the Five Senses

Artist Umberto Nicoletti, a photographer and film and art director, is one of the protagonists of Project Suburb View in which students have the opportunity to participate, together with the educational community, in a lab on the collaborative production of a creative work to promote a place of particular interest to the school community. The project is held by digital artists from Urban Vision with the skills volunteering formula and is coordinated by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale coaches.

We asked Artist Roberto Nicoletti more questions and collected his answers in three audio files.

What do you know about suburbs and the community where you will be operating? Did you already know about it? Is your perception changing?

How do you plan to interact with the history, culture, and identity of the community?

What role do you think digital art can have, with the involvement of communities, in urban regeneration?

The artist is working in Milan with 18 students from a fourth-year class, majoring in graphics and communication, at the Galilei Luxemburg Institute, a school directed by Annamaria Borando. The area is San Siro, a neighbourhood on the western outskirts of Milan in the city’s seventh municipality.

Have you already worked on similar projects with schools? If so, what have you learned from previous experiences?

What attracted you to this project? What was the initial impact with the students?

Have you already though about any elements or themes that you would like to include in the collaborative work? How do you plan to collaborate with the schools and the educational community? Do you have a reference model to make the creative process more participatory? What do you expect to learn or experiment? Which aspects do you think will be more challenging and demanding? What is your relationship with technology? Do you "collaborate" with AI?
